Goal
The primary goal of this program is to educate for professional practice in the field of Latin American an Caribbean Studies. The curriculum has been developed in response to the changing needs of the city and state and reflects the recommendations of former students, practitioner, and agency administrators in the field of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. This program has been designed for the purpose of increasing the number of Latino, bilingual professionals, with the values, skills and knowledge necessary for academic and professional leadership in the area of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Specifically, the program will create professionals with special competencies in the humanities and social sciences, and trained in the study of the social, economic, and political development of the Spanish speaking nations of Latin America and the Caribbean basin.
Objectives
- To increase the student’s ability in the research and study of the humanities or social sciences, that reflects a broad understanding of Latin American and Caribbean societies.
- To work effectively in various branches of government, international organizations, multi-national corporations, journalism, academic research, or teaching.
- To be able to contribute to the public’s knowledge of Latin America and the Caribbean.
- humanistic individuals interested in the processes of peaceful coexistence, and in dissolving the obstacles that traditionally have impeded peace.
- To demonstrate strong intellectual and affective competencies and a capacity to work and develop the social, cultural, and political institutions, that maintain a humanistic attitude towards the people and institutions of other countries.
- To combine hermeneutic and instrumental skills for interpreting and solving problems and who understand the coming century of the global economic marketplace with its impeding impact on democracy and the living culture of nations.
