Dr. Victor G. Alicea Named to City & State’s 2023 “Higher Education Power 100” List

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 2, 2023

City & State New York has recently named Boricua College President Victor G. Alicea to its list of the 2023 City & State Higher Education Power 100 list. City & State’s Higher Education Power 100 highlights the chancellors, presidents, deans, public officials, and philanthropists who lead and serve New York’s top institutions. Dr. Alicea has been ranked among the state’s most powerful and dedicated educators, earning recognition in City & State magazine’s “Education Power 100.”

Dr. Victor G. Alicea, Ph.D., is the founding President of Boricua College. He began his tenure at the College in 1974. Boricua College will soon celebrate its 50th anniversary. During his time at Boricua College, he has proven his steadfast leadership and commitment to moving the institution forward at a time of unprecedented challenge to the health and financial well-being of colleges and universities across the nation.

According to City & State’s list, “Since the first class of Boricua College students was enrolled in 1974, founder Victor G. Alicea has worked hard to ensure that Puerto Ricans, Latinos and other underserved populations have access to an affordable and inclusive education. For over four decades heading up the bilingual, private liberal arts college, Alicea has been informed by his experiences being born in Puerto Rico and raised in Harlem, bringing with him an intimate knowledge of New York City’s immigrant communities.”

The N.Y. State Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities has noted that he is the longest serving president of a private college in New York State, indeed if not in the whole country. His intellectual leadership and meticulous care for the ideals of education prompted the regional accrediting body of the Eastern United States, Middle States Commission for Higher Education, to appoint him, time and again, as Chair of Evaluation Committees for many colleges on the Eastern sea board, including Puerto Rico.

During his tenure as President, Dr. Alicea oversaw a number of critical initiatives, including the College’s current Strategic Plan which has informed much of the progress at Boricua College; the formation of the four school campuses, major construction, critical infrastructure renovations for the campuses.
